The Programmer's Brain

This book looks at the cognitive science behind programming: how your brain reads and remembers code. Drawing on research into memory and attention, it explains why some code is harder to work with than others and offers practical techniques for reducing cognitive load. It connects what we know about how brains process information with the everyday experience of reading and writing software.
Reflections
I’ve always wondered why some code is harder to understand than others. I intuitively gravitated towards certain programming styles without fully understanding why, until I read this. Many of my existing preferences turned out to align with strategies in the book, all aimed at lowering cognitive load and building effective mental models. It hasn’t so much changed my perspective as given me better language for it, backed by actual research, combined with straight forward tips and tricks to support the inner working of the brain. Recommended if you want to stop guessing at why certain code gives you a headache.
